Amethyst in History and Mythology

Amethyst has been treasured by civilizations for thousands of years. The name Amethyst is derived from the Greek word ‘Amethustos’, ‘A’ meaning ‘not’ and ‘methusos’ meaning ‘to intoxicate’.  The ancient Greeks believed that rock crystal had been dyed purple with the tears of Dionysus, the god of intoxication. They would carve drinking vessels made from the Amethyst believing that it would prevent them from getting drunk.

In Christianity, Bishops wore rings made of Amethyst as the royal purple colour symbolised Christ. Members of the Clergy wore it as a symbol of their wisdom and divine connection. Amethyst is also one of the 12 gemstones mentioned in the Old Testament as one of the 12 stones representing the 12 tribes of Israel.

The Egyptians saw Amethyst as a highly valued mineral that could ward off evil. They believed carrying Amethyst even after death would provide them protection in the underworld.

Historically, rich and powerful monarchs used Amethyst as a sign of their royalty. Queen Catherine the Great of Russia (1729-1796) was known to have a special fondness for this stone and sent special expeditions to the Ural Mountains to find Amethysts. Cleopatra, Queen of ancient Egypt was also known to love and own several Amethyst pieces in her collection.

There are also many notable jewellery pieces that have been set with Amethyst in the British Crown Jewels. Here are some of the well-known pieces:

  • The Kent Amethyst parure: A set of matching Amethyst jewellery that includes a necklace, brooches, hair combs, and earrings. The Duchess of Kent originally owned the set, which was made in the 19th century. Queen Victoria designated the set as heirlooms of the crown after the Duchess's death in 1861.
  • St Edward's Crown: Features seven Amethysts and has been worn at every monarch's coronation since Charles II's coronation in 1661.
  • The Imperial Sceptre: Features an Amethyst in cabochon form above the Cullinan I diamond.
